Latest Upgrade – Magento Commerce 1.5
We just upgraded our stores with Magento Commerce 1.5 and wanted to share the new features that were introduced in the latest update.
Easy to Upgrade – Preserve Customisations
The latest update basically doesn’t change the framework and schema of the store a lot which means that upgrading to the new version will not be difficult for your existing stores. The templates, skin and customisation should not break with the new version.
New and Improved Import and Export Functionality
System > Import/Export now has the ability to pick Import or Export and export.
You can then pick what data to export (Products / Customers) and what attributes to filter the data with.
Order Status Management – Modify Order Status and assign state
The Order data is now stored in the database and not XML files which means that you can now modify Order State and Status directly through Magento admin
via System > Order Statuses
Order Status Management – Change Order Address
You can also modify an order address after an order. You can change the Billing Address as well as the Shipping Address using the edit buttons next to the order.
After changing an order address you get a message “Changing address information will not recalculate shipping, tax or other order amount.â€
New Magento Connect Manager 2
The 1.5 Magento Commerce comes with a new Magento Connect Manager Upgrade. The new version is 2.0 of the Magento Connect Manager.
Enable maintenance mode when installing or upgrading the platform:
This will show a “the site is not available right now due to maintenance/upgrade messageâ€
Direct package file upload
The new direct package installation means that you can build your own packages and install them without the extension key.

Opening the file Click on File > Open and pick your file from your computer
Once the file is open select Image > Mode > RGB Colour
Click on Image > Image Size and make sure the resolution is 72 pixels per inch
2. Starting a File from Scratch
Click on File > New Make sure Color Mode is RGB Color and 8 Bit Make sure resolution is 72 pixels per inch
Resizing Images
To resize images click on Image > Image Size and make the appropriate changes in size. Usually Photoshop keeps the proportion standard. So you might not be able to resize a 1000 px by 200px image to 500 px x 150 px. Photoshop does allow you to do it but then the image will be all stretched.
Saving the Image
After you have made the appropriate changes, you can then save the image. To save the image, click on
File > Save for Web and Devices
Make sure the image type is JPEG. Adjust the quality between 50 and 70 to get the best results
Keyword Cannibalisation is a process where your pages don’t get indexed properly by Google because they are similar in content or keywords. So in essence they are fighting with each other to gain rankings on Google and at the end not getting anywhere because Google cannot prioritise and distinguish those pages.
So having more pages with similar content is not necessarily a good thing to lift your ranking. It might be working against you.
Obviously Search Engines don’t want users to build copies of popular content to get higher rankings on websites. Remember Search Engines want the user to have a good experience on the site. Most of the things that Search Engines do is based on the user and not on the website.
Search Engines want to see a good distributed content across the website so that when a visitor jumps from one page to the other, they get good information from the second page.
What causes Keyword Cannibalisation
Multiple pages with same titles
Multiple pages with similar heading tags
Multiple pages with similar content
Multiple internal links going to different pages, so if you have a link saying services which goes to 5 different pages, it is suss 🙂
Multiple similar external links going to different pages
Solution to Keyword Cannibalisation
Create different titles for each page and make them separate
Use different keywords in headings of your pages
Don’t create multiple similar copies of the same page. This is pointless form SEO, user experience and conversion perspectives. After a few pages on the same topic, just go back and improve them instead of adding new ones.
Don’t have similar links going to different pages of the website. So in one page if it says click here to view services, make the other one click here to view our ABC Services etc
